On the occasion of the Fourth of July, let’s learn about this well-known personification of the USA. This older gentleman with his white beard, colorful top hat, and striped trousers is intended to represent Samuel Wilson, a meatpacker from Troy, New York who supplied beef to the American soldiers during the War of 1812. It was not until 1961 that the US Congress officially adopted Uncle Sam as a national symbol. Some argue that Uncle Sam has the same historical background as Brother Jonathan, an earlier personification of the northeastern states of the US. In addition, a female icon known as Columbia was once commonly used to represent the US, and still features today in the logo of Columbia Pictures.
